A promise to Siem Reap Muslim Community Development Organization (SRMCDO).

Last time in Seam Reap, while having lunch in a moslem restorant, The Vice President of SRMCDO mr. Apdulkanny Muoth accompanied me. He is a young active leader together with the mosque leader (Imam) who build this NGO.

He passed me his business card, and brief a bit in Malay language regarding his NGO. He also explain further about the tiny moslem community in Seam Reap. He comes originally from Kampong Cham province in Cambodia. Generally the population is moslem and able to speak Malay.

In his village he also has NGO to support the community there. He mentioned the needed for volunteer teachers (English, Malay and Arabic) to teach the ingenuous students in Kampong Cham and Seam Reap. No worried about the accommodation and food, they will provide that for whoever passionate in helping others.

In addition currently his NGO needs some reading materials, such as books, or other teaching tools (in bahasa Malaysia, English or Arabic) those are very limited. The students are hungry with the knowledge through good reading material resources.

Tiny Moslem Community in Seam Reap

Being adolescent moeslims community in Seam Reap? What and How they survive for the brief review.

In the purpose to find halal food in Seam Reap, I move forward looking for the Mosque. Where is it located. Actually It's not far from my guest house at the "Old Market" area only 500mtrs. The passed way still from lands, not a smooth concrete cements yet. On the gateway installed a green old board explained the name of the "NEAK MAH Mosque" and located at Stung Thmei Village.

Exploring deepen into the muslim Stung Thmei village, the circumstances totally different from the touristics backpackers area at old market. Here, the village live is look simplicity by nature. They look a bit isolated from the busy and noisy live surrounding the old market. Except the people still look very happy, warm friendly smiling and the kids playing and study around. The ladies mostly wearing hijab here, even an adolescent kids already taught to wear the headscarf.

After Zuhur the small kids already trained to attend the lessons (arabic) class for free. There are about 50 kids who study there. It was refreshing my youtfull time, while the teacher with rattan stick reading and beating hardly the whiteboard while the kids recited the lesson :) hehehe.. rattan sticks.. though never see that stuff again used by any teacher in Indonesia.. .

A friend who has the "Moslem Community in Seam Reap" described a bit that the kids are getting free lessons. So, there is no salary for the religious teacher in Cambodia. The government didn't pay any salary for any religion teachers. Mostly the tearchers will survive by the donations of the kids parents, mosque funding or event some donations from other country such as Malaysia and Singapore. Upon the teachers provide teaching voluntary.

The moslem community in Cambodia is tiny, only about 2% with different isolated areas. They are not so much mingle with other beliefs, but the harmonious relations among religions still well maintain. Not far from the mosque also standing a church. NGO such as Muslim Aid provided assistant for servicing on human being to improve this small community.

Livelihood for the community mostly made from trading, merchants and enterpreneurs. By observing the plain spirit of the childrens who following the class, the simplicity lives of the community, absolutely they need more better knowledge for their better generation in the future. Always noted that Knowledge against the poverty..
